THE ROYAL HOTEL as we know it now was, in the late 1700's called 'THE VICTORIA HOTEL'. It was the last building on the seafront going south.

In 1847 Charles Dickens, along with his illustrator, Mark Lemon (see books in the T.V. Lounge) stayed at The Royal Hotel when engaged of writing novel: David Copperfield. Dickens wrote to his wife and declared "Yarmouth was the most wondrous sight his eyes had ever beheld".

The actual menu used by Charles Dickens can be found in Palm Court, with his signature upon it.

Edward VII - eldest son of Queen of Queen Victoria, also stayed at the Royal Hotel with Lily Langtree (the Jersey Lily). The original Edward VII crest is on the front of the hotel.

It is so well-known and bona fide that HM the Queen sent a special message to us last time she was on official visit.
